Small Business Saturday is quickly approaching (November 26, 2016) and it is so important that we go out and support our local businesses. Yes, we should be supporting our small businesses throughout the year but on November 26th we need to show some extra love. Go and buy a loaf of bread from the small bakery down the street, enjoy a nice lunch at your neighbor's restaurant, purchase a gift at one of the many shops in your downtown area, there are so many ways that you can help support local businesses in your hometown. However, if you are unable to spend money on Small Business Saturday, there is a way that you can still show your favorite small business some love.
All businesses love reviews, especially small and local ones. If you are unable to make any additional purchases on November 26, then I challenge you to post three positive reviews for your favorite local restaurants or shops. You can do this either on their Facebook, Google+, Yelp, etc. Reviews help boost the ranking of a business on major search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo!. This means that they pop up closer to the top of the page on the search results. Plus, when you post a review on Facebook, your friends on Facebook will see the review and possibly be influenced by your gracious words. Shoot, you might even remind someone on your friends list about a business that they forgot about.
Not great with words? Reviews carry a heavier weight amongst search engines, but other actions across social media are always helpful to a local business. Share, like, comment, retweet, plus one, etc. a post from the business' page. This will help build their impression rating across the social media platform, which in turn contributes to a higher search engine ranking.
The power of social media is incredible; you CAN make a difference.
